It’s New DVD Tuesday and we have a dancing doll, a Dolly Parton impersonator, old Hollywood and even the antichrist to look forward to in our homes… let’s take a look.
M3gan
Allison Williams is Gemma, a robotics engineer at a toy company who is left with her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) and will do whatever she can to make Cady’s life comfortable. To that end she creates an AI doll that is named M3gan (voice of Jenna Davis). This doll is there to be Cady’s best friend, but when AI gets out of control, who knows what will be Cady’s intention. Rated PG-13
My take –
M3gan is fun. Never takes itself too serious and sets up for a sequel quite nicely and created a social media stir with the crazy dance. Yes I even creep my daughter out when I try to perform the dance, it has nothing to do with my mad skills. Enjoy M3gan now.
Babylon
Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie star in the look at old Hollywood through the lens of director Damien Chazelle (La La Land, Whiplash). Take a peek at the wild and crazy, depraved and looney moments that make the characters that we loved and loved to despise. Rated R
My take –
I just wish it didn’t clock in at nearly 3 hours and 10 minutes but this is another reason why Chazelle is an amazing talent to watch progress in today’s Hollywood. The ability to draw out the best from Pitt, Robbie, Jean Smart and Olivia Wilde (among others) is more proof of his talent at a young age. Sign me up for anything he does.
Seriously Red
When you are the life of the party, it doesn’t matter where the party is as long as you are in the crowd. Red (Krew Boylan) works in real estate, but when she is “discovered” she starts a new career as a Dolly Parton impersonator. But is this where she needs to be? Rated R
My Take –
I was pleasantly surprised by the warmth and humor in Red. It was a film that had moments of true depth. I can’t say that this is a film that would normally be in my wheelhouse and although unspectacular as a whole, I really enjoyed Boylan. With a unique part for Rose Byrne, she delivers and the story progresses throughout. Kudos to director Gracie Otto who followed up the music doc Under the Volcano (a film music fans SHOULD see) with this effort.
