Mill Creek Entertainment announced this past week
that Aug. 8 will be the street date for newest edition to its popular “Stand-Up
Spotlight” line of comedy specials on DVD.
Going center stage this time around is Gary Owen in
the DVD release titled Gary Owen Stand-Up Spotlight. As
with the other releases in this series, the DVD includes two complete comedy
specials … “Gary Owen: Breakin’ Out the Park” and “Gary Owen: #DoinWhatIDo.”
We kick off the laughs with his first comedy
special, the 2008 gem, “Breakin’ Out the Park.” By this time, Owen had completed his Navy
career and found an unlikely career path of auditioning for the Black
Entertainment Television’s “Comic View,” which ultimately led to him hosting
the 1998/99 season.
With a lifepath that included being raised in a
trailer park — with his six siblings — distinguished service in the Navy, and with
largely a black fan base, by 2008 Owen had also appeared in a half-dozen movies
… he not only had unique life-experiences
to draw from, but by now he had honed his comedy skill-set that enabled him to deliver
a 45-minute stand-up routine that absolutely rocked the placed.
Teamed with his early special, is the summer of 2019
Showtime comedy special, “#DoinWhatIDo,” which was filmed live at the Charline
McCombs Empire Theatre in San Antonio.
By 2019, Gary Owen was a household name — three
