A new clip from Young Royals season 3, which is also the show’s final season, unveils Prince Wilhelm’s (Edvin Ryding) not-so-triumphant return to the upper-class boarding school Hillerska. The Swedish teen drama follows the disgraced royal’s time at the school and his burgeoning romance with classmate Simon Eriksson (Omar Rudberg). Their romance has frequently been riddled with drama, but never more so than the season 2 finale when Wilhelm made a public speech admitting that he was the one with Simon in a leaked video, after Simon told him he loved him.
Netflix has now unveiled a brand new first-look clip from Young Royals season 3. Check it out below:
The clip shows Felice, a former flame of Wilhelm’s, and her friends having a conversation when Wilhelm texts her to reveal that he’s coming back to school, at which point they wonder whether he and Simon will be an official couple when he returns. Wilhelm seems to be wondering the same thing, as he is seen sitting in the back of his car, nervously peering out the window.
Will Young Royals Have a Happy Ending?
Now that Young Royals is officially concluding its run, it remains to be seen if it has a happy ending for Simon and Wilhelm. If it follows the lead of Netflix’s Heartstopper, which includes many dramatic twists and turns but nevertheless keeps its central couple Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) relatively happy and secure, that could be the case. However, Heartstopper is based on a graphic novel series whereas Young Royals is an original story, so its ending could be far less predictable.

Because Young Royals season 2 ended with the couple in a relatively good place, it stands to reason that their relationship will become rocky over the course of season 3. There will likely be several bumps in the road as Wilhelm navigates the fallout of his very public confession. However, despite Simon’s pursuit of Marcus (Tommy Wättring) in season 2, the show has always seemed intent on keeping its focus on him and Wilhelm as its central couple.
Marcus joined the Young Royals cast in season 2, and it has not been officially confirmed if the character will return in season 3.
While Young Royals won’t make it easy for them, it is highly likely that Simon and Wilhelm will end up together given the precedent of the previous two seasons. Should this be the case, they would be following the model of many other modern LGBTQ+ shows focusing on teen romance. However, there is always the chance that the show will have a happy ending without the pair ending up together, with both of them using their young romance as a springboard to happy and healthy, but separate lives.
