Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis is getting an IMAX release this fall.
Deadline reports that Megalopolis, the brand-new film from Coppola, will get a “big fall IMAX release” later this year.
Coppola previously said on the Accutron podcast, via IndieWire, that the movie will be released in 2024. “It’s only going to be a few months, and it’ll be out,” Coppola said in January 2024. “All I can say is I love the actors in it. It’s unusual, and it’s never boring. Other than that, wait and see.”
What do we know about Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis?
“In New York, a woman, Julia Cicero, is divided between loyalties to her father, Frank, who has a classical view of society, and her architect lover, Caesar, who is more progressive and ready for the future,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “He wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster.”
Coppola — known for making a number of iconic films such as The Godfather trilogy, 1979’s Apocalypse Now, 1983’s The Outsiders, 1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and more — hasn’t made a movie since 2011’s Twixt. In addition to writing the script and producing the film, Coppola financed Megalopolis, which has been a passion project of his since the 1980s, on his own.
Megalopolis stars Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman, Shia LaBeouf, Talia Shire, Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn Hunter, James Remar, Chloe Fineman, Madeleine Gardella, Isabelle Kusman, D. B. Sweeney, Bailey Ives, Dustin Hoffman, and Giancarlo Esposito.
Driver previously told Collider about Megalopolis, “The movie is wild. It’s so imaginative and big and epic, and it’s bold. It takes a risk, and I couldn’t be more excited by it…Because he financed it himself, it made the shooting process one of the best experiences, if not the best shooting experience, I’ve ever had. There was no excess conversation, there were no people robbing from Peter to pay Paul.”
