Summary

  • Frederick forgives himself after reuniting with his biological father, John Bellasis, resolving his troubled past.
  • Clara and Frederick reconcile after realizing their love’s depth and forgiveness, paving the way for a new start.
  • Enright’s letters to Bellasis and Frederick’s trip to France bring truths to light, helping Frederick understand his history.

MGM+’s Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 8 unveiled the truth behind the biggest secrets that hanged over the period drama’s protagonists, finally giving them some peace in addition to resolving their storylines. Belgravia: The Next Chapter’s ending surprisingly brought back a Belgravia character, through a much-needed flashback and in the main timeline, giving Frederick a glimpse of what a childhood he could have had if only John Bellasis had run away with Susan decades before. Their meeting solved so many mysteries, giving credence to Enright’s standpoint and even reuniting Frederick and James as brothers after Oliver’s hate pulled them apart.

However, Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 8 also revealed where Clara and Davison had run away at the end of Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 7. Their simple life up north gave them clarity and peace, but they couldn’t have stayed away for too long, because of Clara’s feelings for Frederick and her family still in London. Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 8 seamlessly managed to conclude stories of protagonists and secondary characters alike, especially focusing on Nell and Stephen’s reunion and the Rochesters finally deciding to prioritize Peter’s wellbeing instead of their status, listening to Ellerby’s suggestions at last.

Why Clara & Frederick Rekindle Their Relationship In Belgravia’s Ending

Their time apart made them realize where they went wrong & how big their love is

A reconciliation between Clara and Frederick would have been impossible by the end of Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 7, but they did the work on themselves in the season finale. While heartbroken because Clara ran away, Frederick finally understood what he did wrong by listening to Marquise d’Etagnac instead of trusting Clara. Frederick’s inability to accept love and trust others stemmed greatly from his father Oliver never showing love and only mistreating him, thus learning about his biological father and meeting him helped Frederick understand more about his history, and how Enright made sure Bellasis knew about his achievements.

Similarly, Clara’s life up north with Davison had started to show some cracks. Simple and peaceful, Clara and Davison’s jobs as maids gave them a roof over their heads but not happiness. Moreover, being so far away from her family and Frederick made her realize how she missed them, as she couldn’t see them as often as she wanted. Visiting home and talking with Nell about her forgiving Stephen was what Clara needed to understand that she was willing to give her and Frederick’s relationship another chance if only he had apologized, and when he did, their reconciliation was unavoidable.

Frederick’s Reunion With His Biological Father Finally Resolves His Troubled Past

Meeting John Bellasis & talking with him even once let Frederick forgive himself

Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard and Adam James as John Bellasis in Belgravia The Next Chapter episode 8

Belgravia’s John Bellasis inviting some Belgravia: The Next Chapter’s central characters to France to meet his biological son Frederick before his death led to so many truths finally being revealed, helping Frederick overcome his problems. While it might have been difficult for Frederick to reconcile Bellasis as a father figure knowing he had tried to kill his cousin in Belgravia, it was also very easy for him to hear his stories about his past in Belgravia, and how proud he was to hear of his achievements from Enright’s letters.

Knowing he had always had someone in his corner, rooting for him and being proud of him made all the difference for Frederick, even if Bellasis only learned about him from afar. Bellasis’ words proved he only stayed away so that Frederick could learn to become Lord Trenchard, despite it hurting him because he would have loved to see him grow up. While their reunion lasted only for half an hour, Frederick finally understood how Oliver’s mistreatment of him shouldn’t have impacted his life that much, especially considering how his biological father had always loved and supported him from afar.

Enright’s Letters Explain Why He Worked At The Trenchard Household

His meeting with Bellasis decades before influenced his whole life

Gerard Horan as Mr. Enright and Toby Regbo as Reverend James Trenchard in Belgravia The Next Chapter episode 8

Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 8’s flashback finally explained who Enright wrote letters to and even why he ended up with the Trenchards. The location of his secret letters’ addressee had upset many in episode 7, but revealing his involvement with John Bellasis finally explained why he routinely sent letters to France. Owing his new life and livelihood to Bellasis, Enright was tasked with joining the Trenchard household to report on young Frederick throughout his life to his biological father. This not only kept Bellasis in the loop but also turned Enright into one of the few closest to Frederick.

Why The Truth Being Revealed Finally Reunited Frederick & James

Their bond stopped being beyond repair once the truth about their parentage was revealed

Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard and Toby Regbo as Reverend James Trenchard in Belgravia The Next Chapter episode 8

Frederick spent the best part of his life believing his brother James had poisoned Oliver’s heart against him, and with Susan (Alice Eve) only telling him to be strong, it led to their relationship being nonexistent. However, John Bellasis revealing Oliver was likely unable to conceive, thus making James not his biological son either, made the two brothers realize how similar their conditions were. Frederick had already relied on James when he convinced him to meet his biological father in France, but the trip cemented their relationship, finally reuniting them after Oliver’s secret kept dividing them even after his death.

Why Clara Returned To Belgravia In The Season 1 Finale

Her stint up north was peaceful but not happy, missing her family & Frederick

Clara told James how her life wasn’t happy, but “simple and clear,” and she didn’t want to jeopardize that, because despite her love for Frederick, he had hurt her deeply. However, hearing about Frederick selling the Belgravia house to give the money to the poor and reading his letters changed her perspective, especially after hearing from Nell how she had forgiven Stephen everything because he didn’t know what happened to her and their daughter. While Clara intended to return north, she gave her life with Frederick another chance because she really believed he had changed and she still loved him.

Clara & Emily Reuniting Ends Their Belgravia Feud

Time apart made them realize how they only saw their perspective, not the other’s

Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard and Hannah Onslow as Emily Dunn in Belgravia The Next Chapter episode 8

Clara missing Emily and their mother on their late father’s birthday was what prompted her to visit them in London, but what convinced her to stay was also how they could immediately reconnect after she returned. Indeed, their time apart led them both to apologize, Clara for her absentmindedness not thinking that running away might have stopped their allowance, and Emily because she didn’t see Clara’s point until it was too late. Their heart-to-heart gave Clara and Emily the chance to air their grievances and finally express their unconditional support for one another, making their bond as close as before.

How Clara’s Interference Brought Stephen & Nell Back Together

Clara’s influence made their bond even deeper because they had no more secrets

Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard and Lauren McQueen as Nell in Belgravia The Next Chapter episode 8

Clara’s last words to Stephen led him back together with Nell in Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 7, but Clara’s influence went deeper than that. Clara and Nell catching up at the church revealed how Stephen had told everything he had felt about Clara to Nell, just like Nell told him everything about what had happened to her and the daughter he knew nothing about. The honesty Clara inspired essentially made Stephen and Nell reconnect and overcome all the difficulties they went through separately, because, as Nell told Clara, she could forgive him, no matter the pain he inadvertently caused.

What Belgravia: The Next Chapter’s Ending Really Means

Leaving Belgravia, Clara & Frederick have a second chance at a new start

Sophie Thompson as Mrs. Dunn, Hannah Onslow as Emily, Toby Regbo as James Trenchard, Harriet Slater as Clara and Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard in Belgravia The Next Chapter episode 8

Clara’s new outlook on forgiveness and Frederick’s understanding of his past and how it didn’t need to influence him led them to give their relationship a second chance, this time unburdened by the Trenchards’ secret past. Their future traveling also means a new path for Davison and Fletcher, and the general message of a new start is also reflected in Emily asking after another man at James’s gathering, moving on from her crush on James. All in all, Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 8 diametrically opposed its parent series’ ending, instead promising happiness for all the characters at its center.
