There are few actresses who stay as busy as Alicia Vikander. She seems to have a few movies in the can at any given moment, and overall, she tends to lean towards working with respected directors, strong material, or both. But lately, she’s been getting a taste for blockbuster fare. Last year she starred in the flop “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” this summer she’ll rumble with “Jason Bourne,” and now she’s got a franchise to call her own.

The Oscar winner, who took home the Best Supporting Actress prize for “The Danish Girl” in February, has taken the title role in the long developing “Tomb Raider” reboot. The last we heard, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” lead Daisy Ridley was being sought, but she’s been lining up other gigs. So here comes Vikander to tackle the action movie, that will tell the story of Lara Croft’s first adventure, in what I’m sure is being set up for a series of movies.

Roar Uthaug (“The Wave“) will direct the movie, which doesn’t have a release date just yet. But my guess is that WB/MGM will want to get this rolling as soon as Vikander is done shooting Wim Wenders‘ “Submergence” which is now filming. [THR]
