But who has access to Compound V and what Supes have been created thanks to them?
The most obvious group capable of making Supes is Vought-American, the conglomerate responsible for creating the Seven as well as Payback. But Vought-American’s work was based on the research of the Nazis, who made the terrifying villain Stormfront. And of course, it can’t be forgotten the CIA has Compound V and passed it along to Butcher and the Boys.
Other organizations capable of creating Supes are a Japanese company that was responsible for empowering the Boys’ Female. John Godolkin admitted that he created Supes to add to his G-Men without Vought-American’s approval. It’s also implied that the Soviet Union had access to Compound V to create the team Glorious Five Year Plan.
Six Entities Are Capable of Generating Supes
The Boys is a subversive take on the superhero genre. Rather than heroes emerging from alien worlds or magical backgrounds, nearly all the worlds’ heroes are the result of Compound V. While most Supes are made, others were born with Compound V in their systems. Mother’s Milk, for example, was born with superpowers due to his mother’s genes being affected by unsafe working conditions at Vought-American. But almost every other Supe in The Boys is the result of experimentation from businesses or other parties with a vested interest in producing a superpowered human.
Supes have an overwhelming presence in The Boys and they dominate the news and media landscape. But for all the powerful people in the world, they only come from a handful of sources. Truthfully, it’s really Vought-American that’s responsible for most of the Earth’s Supe population. But while every entity had the same formula, each one had its own uses for creating Supes. Vought-American wanted to make as much money as possible, from entertainment deals to military contracts. Godolkin was only interested in creating more G-Men to sate his insidious desires. And of course, the CIA’s only interest with Compound V was enhancing the Boys so they could take on Supes directly.
No Supe Creator in The Boys Had the Same Goals
Compound V was seen by many as the most powerful weapon in the 21st century. While many entities like Vought-American were making Supes to make as much profit as possible, others like the CIA recognized the dangers and only empowered the Boys to counter the Supes. Despite every one of the six entities bringing superpowered people into the world, they all had varying, often conflicting goals. It’s no surprise that organizations capable of creating Supes were going compete against one another, but it is a surprise that as many as six enterprises were able to populate the world of The Boys with dangerous superhumans.
