“Is this the beginning of something crumbling, or is something that’s gonna strengthen [the restaurant industry].” Gravitas Venture has already released this documentary film on VOD already – but we’re just now catching up with it. Directed by Peter Ferriero, Sorry We’re Closed takes a look into the personal trauma, mental health, and livelihood of some of the best chefs during the hardest time of their careers. In the summer of 2020, restaurants are hit doubly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder. Chef Elizabeth Falkner checks in with her restaurateur colleagues across the country to see how they’re coping, and whether or not they’re able to keep on cooking. The film features appearances by Chef Elizabeth, Dominique Crenn, Nancy Silverton, Ann Kim, Gerald Sombright, Maneet Chauhan, and many more chefs from around the nation. This won the Best Feature Documentary award from the Pasadena Film Festival a few months ago. It’s a sad story for so many restaurants that really enjoy serving good food.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Peter Ferriero’s doc Sorry, We’re Closed, direct from YouTube:

Sorry We're Closed Poster

In the summer of 2020, when restaurants are doubly hit hard by Covid-19 and the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, Chef Elizabeth Falkner sets out across the country to check in with her renowned chef & restaurateur colleagues to find out how they are coping with the impossible task of keeping their doors open. The film explores how chefs pivoted, trying to stay afloat through new take-out menus and pop-up grocery stores. Innovations abounded and yet the cracks in the system loomed large. What if all of our ‘go-to’ places were gone? What if we were permanently told, “Sorry, We’re Closed”? Sorry, We’re Closed is a doc directed by filmmaker Peter Ferriero, director of the doc films The Price of Fame and Her Name Is Chef previously. It’s produced by Elizabeth Falkner, Peter Ferriero, and Lisa Shotland. Executive produced by Raymond Esposito. Gravitas and The Oaks Media Group already debuted Sorry, We’re Closed direct-to-VOD on August 8th, 2023 – it’s available to watch at home now whenever you want. Is anyone interested?
