Labeled “one of the most exciting indie titles in years” by Harrison Abbott right here on Bloody Disgusting last year, the eldritch horror fishing game Dredge is now getting a movie!

Variety reports this afternoon, “Black Salt Games has partnered with production company Story Kitchen to create a live-action feature adaptation of the single-player Lovecraftian fishing adventure with a sinister undercurrent.”

The official logline describes the film adaptation as follows: “Think ‘The Sixth Sense’ on the water. A grounded atmospheric cosmic horror blend of HP Lovecraft and Ernest Hemingway.”

“We are excited to partner with such an experienced studio team to bring the world we created to live action and ignite the imagination of audiences across the globe,” said Black Salt Games’ Nadia Thorne, Joel Mason, Alex Ritchie and Michael Bastiaens in a statement.

Story Kitchen’s Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, Dan Jevons and Timothy I. Stevenson added in their own statement this week, “’Dredge’ is a captivatingly eerie and profoundly rich story that had us completely hooked from the very beginning!”

Team17 and Black Salt Games’ Dredge was released back in March of last year for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series and PC via Steam.

The game sees you step into the water-logged boots of a down-on-their luck fisherman and explore a collection of remote isles while scouring the surrounding depths for a variety of fish and valuable deep-sea curios. Once your trawler is full, sell your haul to the peculiar locals while completing quests and unraveling more about each archipelago.

However, as you do, you soon discover that there’s something more dangerous than the rocks and shallow reefs lurking in the dark waters at night…

Harrison Abbott raved in his 5-star review for Bloody Disgusting, “In short, Dredge is one of the most exciting and unpredictable indie titles that we’ve played in years. It’d be impossible to sing all of its praises in just one review but what’s important to note is that it has a seemingly inexhaustible supply of original ideas.

“One hell of a calling card for Black Salt, it somehow marries the contradictory traits of survival horror and the cosy game in a way that makes both genres feel fresh again. It’s an unlikely pairing for sure, but one that goes down swimmingly no matter what you’re into.”
