MaXXXine star Mia Goth explains how the movie will change the horror formula. The upcoming movie is the third film in the X franchise, acting as a direct sequel to Ti West’s X. It will also see the return of Goth as Maxine and will chronicle her journey to become a famous actress in 1980s Hollywood. Goth portrayed Pearl in X and its prequel, Pearl, who dreamed of becoming a famous star during World War I.
In a recent interview with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), Goth opened up about how the movie will take a different approach from X and Pearl. Explaining how she views MaXXXine as a superhero movie, Goth also discusses how Maxine has evolved as a protagonist who survived a rather traumatic event from X. Check out what she said on the matter below:
“I see MaXXXine as a superhero movie – that’s how I read the script. Maxine, as a character, has come a long way. She’s a survivor, she’s gone through a lot. When we meet her again, in this new world that she’s in, she’s really fought for everything that she has, and she’s not about to give that up. She’s going to fight for what she has. She’s a badass. There’s a strength to her. And she’s a really proactive, determined, focused woman. She goes after what she wants, and she’s not really going to take no for an answer.”
What To Expect For MaXXXine
While not much is currently known about MaXXXine‘s plot, Goth’s declarations on how Maxine has evolved as a character give a good idea of what to expect from the movie. In X, Maxine was slated to be the star of an adult film until things went quickly awry. Now, she has a bigger picture in mind by moving to Hollywood and will likely be as determined as she and Pearl were in X and Pearl. MaXXXine will likely follow the protagonist attempting to become a Hollywood star after West showed her trying to attempt that success in the adult film industry in the 1970s.
It’s unclear where the film’s slasher aspects will come into play. MaXXXine could very well adopt Pearl‘s structure, where a failed attempt at becoming a movie star will lead her into a dark path. However, it is not clear if the film has any antagonists or if it will make Maxine the story’s anti-hero. No character names have been confirmed, and the film’s plot has been tight-lipped since its announcement in September 2022.
Still, MaXXXine features a star-studded ensemble. Aside from Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Halsey, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, and Giancarlo Esposito have joined the cast. Like X and Pearl, West is the sole screenwriter for the movie, which is billed as the conclusion to the trilogy. The movie will likely release in 2024 and will hopefully satisfyingly conclude the X trilogy.
