Summary

  • Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians received high praise among critics and was a massive success regarding viewership numbers.
  • Like Percy Jackson, Alex Rider also improves upon a failed film adaptation, making it the perfect watch for those who loved the Disney+ show.
  • Percy Jackson fans can enjoy Alex Rider on Amazon Prime Video while waiting for season 2.

Years after a disastrous adaptation of Rick Riordan’s novels, Percy Jackson and the Olympians finally gave the fans what they wanted, and while they wait for a second season, they can check out a similar television show. The Disney+ fantasy television series is based on Riordan’s book series of the same name, depicting a young boy named Percy Jackson who learns that his father is Poseidon, making him a powerful demigod. Season 1 adapted the first novel in the series, The Lightning Thief, which chronicles Percy’s discovery of his parentage and quest to find Zeus’s missing Master Bolt.

Unlike the 2010 film adaptation, the 2023 television show was a massive success. Percy Jackson and the Olympians received positive reviews, with critics praising the series for its faithfulness to its source material and performances. The show also reeled in impressive ratings for the streaming service — more than 13 million people watched the premiere in its first six days on Disney+. Consequently, Disney greenlit season 2, based on the second book in Riordan’s series, The Sea of Monsters. Unfortunately, it might be a while before season 2 premieres, but in the meantime, Amazon already has the perfect replacement for Percy Jackson.

If Percy Jackson and the Olympians fans already miss the series, they should look no further than Alex Rider. Guy Burt wrote and adapted the British spy thriller television show from Anthony Horowitz’s book series of the same name, and it revolves around the titular character, whom MI6 recruits as a teenage spy. Alex Rider consists of two seasons and 16 episodes, with a third and final season premiering in April 2024.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians
and
Alex Rider
are both based on Young Adult franchises that were initially turned into terrible films and then given better television adaptations.

Like Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+, each Alex Rider season adapts a different novel from its book series. So, season 1 of the Amazon television show was based on Horowitz’s Point Blanc, which is, interestingly, the second novel in his Alex Rider works, not the first. Meanwhile, the second season was inspired by Eagle Strike, the fourth book, and Alex Rider season 3 will adapt Scorpia, the fifth installment in the series. Another streaming service or network could potentially pick up Alex Rider for season 4, but as of the writing of this article, season 3 is the end.

Alex Rider Did Percy Jackson’s TV Show Redemption Already

Aside from centering around young heroes (one as a demigod and the other as a secret spy), Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Alex Rider share another thing in common — both are based on Young Adult franchises that were initially turned into terrible films and then given better television adaptations. The 2010 film Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was heavily criticized for deviating from Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief. Meanwhile, the 2006 movie Stormbreaker, based on the first book in the Alex Rider series, was a commercial and critical failure.

Before the Disney+ series redeemed Riordan’s novels following the disaster that was Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Amazon did the same thing with Anthony Horowitz’s Alex Rider book series. The television show adaptation of Alex Rider was far more successful than Stormbreaker, which undoubtedly satisfied fans who were disappointed with the film. So, Percy Jackson and the Olympians followed in Alex Rider‘s footsteps, and the Amazon series saved its source material from being known for having awful adaptations first.

Percy Jackson’s Disney Success Can Bring More Eyes Onto Alex Rider

Percy Jackson and the Olympians has an advantage over Alex Rider due to its overwhelming popularity. However, all the attention on the Disney+ series may lead to more viewers for the Amazon Freevee show. Season 1 of the television adaptation of Rick Riordan’s book series was a triumph, as mentioned above. It brought in millions of viewers, and critics gave it high praise. Meanwhile, Alex Rider has also received positive reviews but has not reached the same success as Percy Jackson.

Alex
Rider
seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the United States. Season 3 (the show’s last) will premiere on April 5, 2024, on Amazon Freevee.

Perhaps fans of the fantasy show will give some love to Alex Rider, especially as it enters its final season. Plus, it certainly helps that season 3 airs during the Disney+ series’ hiatus. So, while fans wait for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, they should watch Alex Rider, and the more people that check it out, the higher the possibility of another streaming service picking it up for a fourth season.
