A popular Smallville fan account has posted even more spectacular images of Tom Welling suiting up as Superman, alongside his nemesis, Lex Luthor, played by Michael Rosenbaum. Despite Smallville wrapping up in 2011, the series continues to be one of the most beloved iterations of Clark Kent ever delivered in live-action. Tom Welling played a young Clark, in the years leading up to him embracing his role as the powerful Superman, the most powerful hero on Earth.
However, the series had a strict rule that meant Welling was never actually shown in the suit, aside from a brief CGI glimpse in the finale. This, of course, leaves fans of the series and Tom Welling’s version of Superman in particular, desperate to see what could have been if the series evolved beyond Clark Kent from Smallville and embraced the hero of Metropolis. And thanks to the brilliant images produced by Instagram user buffy2ville, the dream becomes a reality.
How Smallville’s Justice League Can Return
The Heroes Of Smallville Make It To The Big Leagues
While Smallville has been off the air for more than a decade, and many of the cast may no longer be suitable to play young adults, there is a way that they could return. And in fact, Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum, the actors behind the hero and villain of the story, have both been very clear that they are pursuing just such a goal (via Collider). This Smallville animated series will serve as a sequel to the original show, continuing the growth and advancement of the main characters.
Within this context, the familiar voices can reprise their old roles, and finally build on the events of the original series. And while this clearly means big things are to come for Clark and Lex as they become bitter rivals once and for all, it could also lead to some other characters returning to the show, or joining the cast in a much more influential role. For instance, the series introduced several members of the Justice League, and briefly hinted at the team being from within that universe, but the sequel could make that a reality.
However, until the animated Smallville show begins to attract more attention, the only way to see Welling and his friends suit up is through fan art like buffy2live’s. This does a great job at building anticipation and imagining what the heroes of the Smallville Justice League could have looked like with costumes that resemble the modern DCEU. Hopefully, once the animated spin-off comes out, the series will do more than simply imagine this outcome, and Smallville’s greatest heroes will finally get their chance in the sun.
